Hurricane Katrina Damages Superdome
The Louisiana Superdome - the 77,000-seat, steel-framework stadium, home of the NFL's New Orleans Saints, was damaged by hurricane Katrina. Katrina ripped two holes in the domed roof, letting in rain as thousands of storm refugees huddled inside Monday.
Superdome and government emergency officials stressed that they did not expect the huge roof to fail because of the relatively small breaches, each about 15 to 20 feet long and 4 to 5 feet wide.
With Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast, the New Orleans Saints entire football operations staff went to San Jose, Calif. on Sunday in preparation for the Saints' final preseason contest at Oakland on Thursday night.
"The team decided...that it would be best to first consider the safety of our organization and our families," Saints Director of Media & Public Relations Greg Bensel said in a statement. "We decided to leave as late as possible on Sunday to give everyone enough time to take care of their personal situations and to ensure that everyone's family was out of harm's way."
