Thoughts on 49ers Smith, Bills Losman, and Steelers Staley

The 49ers have announced that newbie QB Alex Smith will start their first pre-season game against the Raiders. Maybe this is a preview of opening day, maybe not.

Don't be surprised if Smith does well in his initial efforts. Don't be fooled by it either. The pace of the game changes from pre-season to the real thing. If the 49ers decide to go with Alex over Tim Rattay in the opener, Mr. Smith and those that chose him as their Fantasy Football starting QB are likely in for a rough day.

Speaking of rough days, if young QBs are supposed to have a much easier time of it in a pre-season game, what does that say about Bills QB J.P. Losman's lackluster performance in the scrimmage against Green Bay last week. I still would keep an eye on Kelly Holcomb as a potential sleeper.

Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, Duce Staley's injury is supposed to keep him out a month. That brings us right up to opening day. Will Staley start, even if he is totally healthy? Not very likely. With Jerome Bettis and a stable of young RBs like Verron Haynes behind him expect the Steelers to ease Staley back into the lineup.

Losman having a lack luster performance???? It was a SCRIMAGE, not even a preseason game. He was 6 of 9 passing for 67 yards no TD's or INT's. What on earth were you expecting??? Favre was 3 of 6 for 23 yards should we all be worried about A. Rogers taking over earlier than expected??? Please don't print any more non-news just to fill our your article! Give us something we can use. Bledsoe wasn't traded to make room for Holcomb. Losman will play all 16 games unless injured.

Give us something we can use? If we just give you information that agree's with your opinions, that only helps your ego - not your season. Truth is, we are not the only ones that feel Losman is a poor choice this year.

I haven't seen many projections that have him in the top 20 (we don't)- which means if you are not in a league with more than 10 teams - he shouldn't even be a #2 fantasy QB this year. (Except maybe for a Bill's fan.)

He may have completed passes, but he looked like a deer in headlights. NFL games are a little faster than pre-season or scrimages - so he better pick it up or you will be looking back at the original post as pure genius.
