Kicker John Carney was released by the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.

The release occurred two days after the Saints had picked up K Olindo Mare from the Dolphins.

Carney is ranked second in club history with 661 points and 150 field goals. In 2002, he set a team record for points in a season with 130.

John Carney said he was "shocked and disappointed" by the New Orleans Saints' decision to replace him after six years as their kicker, but denied reports that he plans to retire.
