Fantasy Football Draft 2008: Vernon Davis

Fantasy Football Draft 2008: Vernon Davis

Last year with the 49ers, Vernon Davis had a quiet 52 receptions for the beleaguered Bay Area offense. That stat was good enough for 9th overall in the NFL for tight ends - and tied for 13th in touchdowns.

This year, under the Mike Martz offense, opportunities should further improve. According to Coach Nolan, "He had it 53 times last year and if he can add another 20 or 25 to that it will help us win."

If Davis adds even the low end of that spectrum - he will have 70-75 receptions, which could have him rank in the top 5 tight ends in the league in that category.

Fantasy Football Draft 2008: Laurence Maroney

Fantasy Football Draft 2008: Laurence Maroney

Its a little early to call too many 'shots' - but I'm calling this one now! Laurence Maroney is a wasted first round pick!

I don't care how deep your league is - if you are picking Maroney with your first pick, your year is not looking good. Maroney was going to have a great 2007 campaign as a featured back - and he failed beyond calculation.

Now, in 2008, we have Sammie Morris AND LaMont Jordan (off waivers from the Raiders) to share touches. This will only diminish the limited points you will see in 2008 from Maroney.

Shockey Trade = Uptick in Value for Brees

The Jeremy Shockey trade that had been rumored since the draft back in April has finally happened. So what does it mean to the Saints from a Fantasy Football standpoint? It means QB Drew Brees just moved up the draft board!

Shockey, who will never be confused with the league's elite TE's, is just another target to add to the already respectable list of Reggie Bush and Marques Colston.

The Saints had a quality TE last year in Eric Johnson, who caught 48 balls and 2 touchdowns. However, Shockey should be able to improve on those numbers enough to help Brees become a solid top-5 choice in the 2008 Fantasy Draft.

Rex Grossman: Battling Kyle Orton for QB Spot

Rex Grossman: Battling Kyle Orton for QB Spot

After offseason workouts, offensive coordinator Ron Turner said Grossman and Orton are "completely even" heading into training camp, the team's official site reports.

Fantasy Football Recommendation: This battle sounds about as exciting as Alex Smith vs. Shaun Hill in San Francisco. Avoid these QB's on draft day!

Favre wants release from Packers

Brett Favre asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team after apparently being told his latest retirement reversal wasn’t welcome news in Green Bay.

The team said it would do "what’s right" in response to Favre's request, which was first reported by ESPN.

"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms," the team's statement said.

Fantasy Football: Could Brett Favre Return?

Fantasy Football: Could Brett Favre Return?

Brett Favre is considering coming out of retirement, according to an ESPN report. ESPN's Chris Mortensen said Wednesday that a Packers source told him the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.

"The Packers have no reaction," team spokesman Jeff Blumb told The Associated Press.

Favre's agent didn't return a message seeking comment.

Favre retired March 6 after a storied 17year career.

Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's "NFL Live" that Favre made similar comments to him.

As of now, the Packers plan to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season, and he's been leading the team through organized team activities and minicamp.

According to the ESPN report, the Packers would be reluctant to open the door for Favre because "Brett retired for the right reasons, even though I know his family is tugging on him (to play)."
